Meeting point: 12:00
Tromsø harbor (subject to change)
Arrival and departure:
The arrival and departure to and from Tromsø are to be organized individually by each crew member. The flight time is usually around 5 to 7 hours with a stopover in Oslo. Tromsø Airport (TOS) is only a few kilometers from the city center and the harbor. Please allow enough buffer time for your journey and book your flights only once we have confirmed the trip with enough crew members.
Our partner travel agency, www.nordwindreisen.de, will be happy to assist you with booking your flights.
The planned start and end point of the tour is in Tromsø Havn (subject to change).
Carpooling to the port: Please let us know when you register if we can share your contact details with your fellow travelers. This way you can also coordinate with the rest of the crew to organize joint transfers from the airport to the port (transfer is not included in the tour price).
Sailing:
You don’t need any sailing experience.
Our main focus is definitely on observing whales and the northern lights. When we encounter whales, it is not possible to sail, as we need to respect the animals and cannot manoeuvre quickly enough under sail in narrow fjords. Once we reach a harbour, there is usually an opportunity to stretch your legs, and sometimes we may also go for a short, easy walk.
- Day 1: Individual arrival in Tromsø, cabin allocation, safety briefing, shared dinner
Meals: D - Day 2–7: Sailing, Northern Lights, Whales and Shore Excursions
Over the next days, we let wind, weather and whales guide our journey. As the first daylight touches the mountain tops, we head out into the fjords and scan the water for whales – often a blow rising above the surface reveals their presence. Sometimes sea eagles glide silently overhead. In the afternoon, the low Arctic sun bathes the landscape in golden and pink light before we anchor for the night in a sheltered bay.
Depending on the conditions, we also go ashore and experience the special calm of the Arctic winter night. Often, a simple glance at the sky is enough to spot the dancing northern lights.
If the sea becomes too rough, we explore the surroundings on land.

First of all: we are not in a zoo or at SeaWorld. This means there is no guarantee of seeing whales, wildlife of any kind, or the northern lights. However, the chances of encountering whales in Northern Norway are very high. From mid to late October, large schools of herring move into the fjords, and the whales follow them. Orcas are especially common, as they specialise in hunting herring. Humpback whales also enter the fjords, and even fin whales – the second-largest animal in the world – are spotted regularly.
Since we are out for a full week, the chances of having memorable whale encounters are excellent. This tour is specifically designed for whale watching. At the same time, it is important to give the animals plenty of space and to approach them with respect.
The weather in Norway can be very changeable and may occasionally turn stormy in November. Sometimes there is already snow at the beginning of the month, and sometimes not. Warm winter clothing is definitely recommended. With each passing day, the amount of daylight decreases, and from around 22/23 November, the polar night begins.
What does that mean exactly? The sun no longer rises above the horizon, yet there are still a few hours of soft daylight. It often bathes the surroundings in deep shades of pink – sometimes even in a slightly kitschy, bright hue – as if everything were dipped in colour. The long twilight periods also wrap the landscape in beautiful tones of blue.
The polar night is without a doubt a special experience – calm, atmospheric and truly unique.
SV Lazy – your home at sea
The SV Lazy combines adventure and comfort: plenty of space for up to 10 guests, cozy cabins, a sunny deck, and a bright deck saloon with panoramic views. With smart features, storage for skis and fishing gear, and a dedicated drying room, she is ideal for voyages north of the Arctic Circle – robust, seaworthy, and yet as inviting as a second home. She is equipped with a reefable mainsail and mizzen, as well as a genoa and staysail. Under sail, the yacht makes up to 8 knots.
You do NOT need any sailing experience. On the first day there is an intensive safety briefing. If you are interested, you will receive a basic sailing course, so you have the opportunity to learn the basics of sailing from an internationally certified skipper.
We cook together every evening. During the day, we prepare snacks. When we call at a port, we can visit a restaurant if we wish (not included in the tour price). A bath towel is provided for each crew member.
Please bring an additional bath towel. Bed linen and bedding are also provided.
