7 days of Dolomite feeling from the Carezza Pass to the Marmolada - legendary & fabulous

From King Laurin's kingdom, the Rosengarten, past the Langkofel and Sella - on our tour we cross three of the most spectacular mountain ranges in the Dolomites. Since 2009, parts of the Dolomites have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site and with good reason: we hike through impressive mountain landscapes and high valleys and spend the night in beautiful mountain huts. Over gentle meadow slopes and past rugged limestone cliffs surrounded by plenty of celebrities: Plattkofel, Langkofel and of course the “Queen of the Dolomites” Marmolada. Another highlight is certainly the crossing of the Piz Boè (3,151 m). This week-long tour takes us from hut to hut with charming highlights and stunning views.

Arrival and departure:
Public transportation by train and bus is recommended. The nearest train station is in Bolzano. From there there is a bus connection to Moena. If it is not possible to arrive or depart by public transport, there are parking spaces available at the meeting point in Moena.

The tour starts and ends at the tourist information office in Moena.

Medium difficulty:
We hike on predominantly medium-difficulty mountain trails. The nature of the paths can be rocky and also blocked. Occasionally there are exposed passages that are secured with wire ropes. Hiking experience, surefootedness and a head for heights are required here.

Medium fitness level:
You have a good basic level of fitness and stamina for tours with a walking time (real walking time without breaks) of up to 7 hours and up to a maximum of 1200 vertical meters in ascent and descent.

Day 1: Moena (1,185 m) - Croda Rossa Hut (2,283 m)
To start our tour, we hike through often dense forests and for a while along the Ruf de Peniòla rift system up to the Karer Pass (1,745 m). Now the forest becomes thinner and we hike past mountain huts up to the hut. By this point, we are completely immersed in the scenery of the Rosengarten. After checking into our rooms, we have the option of taking a short hike up the local mountain Ciampaz (2,316 m) (30 minutes).

Day 2: Croda Rossa hut (2,283 m) - Antermoia hut (2,496 m)
Today we hike under the spell of the Catinaccio up to the Zigolade Pass (2,549 m) and continue with gentle ups and downs into the Val de Violet. Here we find ourselves in one of the most famous mountaineering areas, made world-famous by pioneers such as Paul Preuss and Tita Piaz. We continue up to the Grasleitenpass hut (2,601 m), where we enjoy a well-earned lunch break with a view of the mighty Kesselkogel (3,002 m). We then face a short, final climb of the day, up to the Antermoia Pass (2,769 m). From here, it's all downhill past the beautiful Lake Antermoia to the hut.

Day 3: Antermoia hut (2,496 m) - Friedrich August hut (2,294 m)
We gradually leave the Catinaccio and approach the Sassolungo group. We hike over the Passo di Dona (2,516 m) down into Val Duron (1,856 m). Now we head uphill again to the Plattkofelalm (2,247 m), where we stop for lunch. Afterwards, we take a leisurely hike up and down along the southern flank of the Landkofel group on the original Friedrich August Trail, named after the Saxon king, to the hut of the same name.
↑ 650 m, ↓ 850 m, 12 km, walking time: approx. 5:00 h, meals: B, D

Day 4: Friedrich August Hut (2,294 m) - Capanna di Fassa (3,151 m)
After breakfast, we hike over to the Sella Pass (2,237 m). The evening before, we decide whether to take the bus from here to shorten the route on the asphalt. Otherwise, we walk along the road for a while until we can take the hiking trail again at a bend to the right. With a view of the mighty Sella massif, the path climbs up to the barren high plateau of the Sella and on to Piz Boé (3,151 m). Right at the summit is our small but beautiful hut with a magnificent panoramic view over the entire Dolomites to the Großglockner, Großvenediger, the Zillertal, Ötztal and Stubai Alps. In fine weather, we enjoy a wonderful sunset after dinner and round off the evening with a glass of Italian wine. (Note: as the hut only has 22 beds, you may have to switch to the Rifugio Boé, which is located just below the summit).
Without bus: ↑ 1,300 m, ↓ 450 m, 12 km, walking time: approx. 5:30 h, meals: B, D

Day 5: Capanna di Fassa (3,151 m) - Rifugio Castiglioni Marmolada (2,053 m)

We hike downhill over the broad south-western ridge to Forcella Pordoi (2,850 m). From here we continue down the south-facing scree gully to the Pordoi Pass (2,240 m), where the usual pass road hustle and bustle awaits us. From here, we follow the Bindelweg trail, which is known for its magnificent panoramic views. We start with a gentle up and down before descending steadily to the western end of Lago di Fedaia, where our hut is located. The view of the Marmolada is simply spectacular!
↑ 300 m, ↓ 1,370 m, 12 km, walking time: approx. 4:30 h, meals: B, D

Day 6: Rifugio Castiglioni Marmolada (2,053 m) - Rifugio Contrin (2,016 m)
Due to the glacier collapse in July 2022, it is not possible to cross the Forcella della Marmolada to Rifugio Contrin. We therefore continue yesterday's descent for the time being and also hike along the pass road for a while before turning off into the Val de Contrin and continuing our ascent to today's hut.
↑ 550 m, ↓ 600 m, 12 km, walking time: approx. 4:00 h, meals: B, D

Day 7: Rifugio Contrin (2,016 m) - Passo San Pellegrino (1,918 m)
We start today with the last ascent of our tour and follow the Dolomites high trail no. 2 to the Passo delle Cirelle (2,680 m). Once again we enjoy the view of the peaks over 3000 m high and the vertical walls of the Marmolada. From here we make our final descent to the Pellegrino Pass, where a shuttle takes us back to our starting point in Moena. Individual journey home.
↑ 700 m, ↓ 800 m, 11 km, walking time: approx. 4:30 h, meals: B
